Post Interview Follow-Up

So much work is when interviewing: applying for the job, perhaps a phone interview or two, followed by an in-person (or virtual) interview. You took the time to prepare, learn about the company and products, services and people. You feel like you’ve aced the interview and did all you could to prepare.

Now what?

One of the top post-interview questions I receive from candidates is about interview follow-up. I understand that waiting is not easy; however, you don’t want to come across as being pushy with excessive calls and emails. It’s important to keep in mind that hiring managers may be interviewing several candidates during different time frames.

3 Types of Emails and When to Use Them

  • Thank You Email
    • Use when interview is complete
    • Timing: send within 24 hours of the interview
    • Send email to each person you interviewed with
  • Follow-up Email
    • Use when you haven’t heard back 1 week after your interview
    • If you are working with a recruiter, ask him/her to perform follow-up
    • Make it short and sweet: stick to timing
  • Feedback Request
    • Use when you don’t get the job but are curious about feedback
    • Keep a positive tone
    • Ask to be kept in mind for future openings

Job searching and the interview process can be exhausting and stressful. Do your best to keep a positive attitude throughout the process and eventually you will land the right role.
